Selling the Hard Sell
Speaker: Jeanne Lin, Holly Root and Barbara Poelle
Date: 11/20/2010
Location: Doubletree Nashville Airport, 2424 Atrium Way
All day event! If your labor-of-love manuscript defies the publishing mold, you won’t want to miss this presentation. Join Golden Heart® winner and Asian-set historical romance author Jeannie Lin (Butterfly Swords, Harlequin Mills & Boon) as she shares what it took to get her “hard-sell” novel from slush pile to sale. Gain unique insight on using a marketing perspective to get that manuscript in the door, and tips to position your partial to hook that agent or editor.
Agents Holly Root (Waxman Literary Agency) and Barbara Poelle (Irene Goodman Literary Agency) will be on hand doing Q&A panels and reading member-submitted first pages. The pages will be anonymous, but they are your way to get in front of TWO agents!!!! If either agent is intrigued by what she hears, they’ll request to see more! If not, then everyone will get the opportunity to learn from the feedback. If you’ve never been part of something like this, this is a fabulous group exercise and very much simulates real world.
Debut YA Authors Myra McEntire and Victoria Schwab will also be on hand to do a YA panel with the agents.
***MCRW Members Only.
Cost is $15. Contact Kim Law to register.
About the Speaker:
Jeannie Lin grew up fascinated with stories of Western epic fantasy and Eastern martial arts adventures. When her best friend introduced her to romance novels in middle school, the stage was set. Jeannie started writing her first romance while working as a high school science teacher in South Central Los Angeles. After four years of trying to break into publishing with an Asian-set historical, her 2009 Golden Heart® winning manuscript, Butterfly Swords, sold to Harlequin Mills & Boon. As a technical consultant, backpacker, and vacation junkie, she’s traveled all over the United States as well as Europe, South Korea, Japan, China, and Vietnam. She’s now happily settled in St. Louis with her wonderfully supportive husband and continues to journey to exotic locations in her stories. Find out more about Jeannie Lin online at http://www.jeannielin.com.
Holly Root began her publishing career as an editor in her hometown of Nashville, TN. Prior to joining the Waxman Literary Agency in 2007, she worked at the William Morris Agency and Trident Media Group. At Waxman Agency she has represented bestselling authors of fiction and nonfiction as well as expanding the agency’s reach into books for young readers. She is currently seeking middle grade and young adult fiction, women’s fiction, urban fantasy and romance.
Barbara Poelle began her publishing career as a freelance copywriter and editor before joining the Goodman Agency in 2007, but feels as if she truly prepared for the industry during her brief stint as a stand-up comic in Los Angeles. She has found success placing thrillers, literary suspense, historical romances, humorous/platform driven non-fiction, and upmarket fiction and is actively seeking her next great client in those genres, but is passionate about anything with a unique voice. Barbara has a very hands on approach with the craft and editorial details of the books she represents, and loves working with her clients to take their writing to the next level.
